Are you ready to celebrate Independence Day?
- Hot dogs: Check
- Chips: Check
- Fireworks: Check
- Beer: Check. Check.
There are two more things we need to add this year:
- Declaration of Independence Check
- US Constitution Check
Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you know that many of the basic rights we value are under attack. There are even those who think Jan. 6th should be celebrated instead of July 4.
As I used to say when I was a kid, they are full of bologna and a lot more.
We need to remind ourselves of the real reason to celebrate: our rights and liberties in this democracy.
Let’s celebrate the ideas and ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you know that many of the basic rights we value are under attack. There are even those who think Jan. 6th should be celebrated instead of July 4.”
- All men (yes, and women) are created equal.
- We all have rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
- Governments get their powers from the consent of the governed.
There are those who want to destroy our freedom of religion and our rights to vote.
There are those who want to destroy public education and the rights to privacy.
There are those who want the government to have strict control over abortion and send doctors to jail who help women in need.
There are those who believe the rights of the rich to keep unconscionable amounts of money are more important than providing health insurance.
That's why it’s important to put the pickles and mustard aside for a few minutes to cherish our liberties and vow to protect them.
Let’s make sure this is not the last Independence Day we celebrate.
